Some of cinema’s greatest achievements have been those based on or inspired by beloved novels ranging from Oscar® winners like THE GODFATHER to massive franchises like the HARRY POTTER movies. This year alone, we’ve seen movies like OPPENHEIMER, ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET, and several others on the big screen, and there’s more on the way.
This fall and winter will bring even more book-to-movie adaptations to AMC Theatres locations nationwide, with some of the biggest movies of the year finally making their long-awaited silver-screen debut. Here are six of those movies we cannot wait to see.
A Haunting In Venice
This September, Kenneth Branagh will return for his third Agatha Christie book-to-screen adaptation with the release of A HAUNTING IN VENICE, both as the film’s director and its star: the renowned, and now retired, detective Hercule Poirot. While visiting the Italian city of Venice and its canals, the astute private eye is invited to attend a séance where one of the guests is later found dead. With his wits, charm, and skepticism on hand, Poirot attempts to get to the bottom of this shocking murder.
Unlike MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and DEATH ON THE NILE, Branagh’s latest whodunit also has a supernatural horror element to it, which could very well make Poriot’s investigation all the more difficult.
A HAUNTING IN VENICE opens September 15th
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Martin Scorsese’s long-in-the-works KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, which is based on David Grann’s 2017 novel of the same name, looks to be a sprawling, beautiful, and violent epic about a string of mysterious murders in a 1920s Oklahoma boomtown.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons, the more than three-hour epic will explore various aspects of the crimes, from the members of the Osage tribe who were killed in brutal fashion, to the locals jealous of their newfound fortune to those who fall somewhere between it all. An awards contender months before it’s even released, this looks to be a cinematic experience like no other.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON opens October 20th
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes
A prequel to fan-favorite THE HUNGER GAMES franchise, Francis Lawrence’s THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES takes an earlier look at the life of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) decade before he became the tyrannical president of Panem. Set amidst the 10th annual Hunger Games, the movie based on Suzanne Collins 2020 novel of the same name follows the young Snow as he mentors Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute who could forever change his destiny as well as his country.
With an all-star cast including the likes of Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, and Josh Andrés Rivera, THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES looks to be a riveting, action-packed, and dramatic thriller when it opens this fall.

Wonka
Paul King, who is no stranger to the world of high-profile book adaptations thanks to his work in the PADDINGTON franchise, will take audiences to a world of pure imagination with his much anticipated WONKA. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” this original story is a prequel to WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. The musical fantasy film will go back to the early days of the iconic chocolatier.
This time around, Timothée Chalamet will don Willy Wonka’s signature hat and coat as the character makes a name for himself, a feat that proves to be no easy task thanks to the Chocolate Cartel, a group of established candy-makers not too keen on the idea of new competition. Other actors like Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, and Hugh Grant (as an Oompa-Loompa) are also set to appear.
