Early Oscars Predictions For 2023 Movies

June 7th, 2023Early Oscars Predictions For 2023 Movies

Though the 96th Academy Awards® won’t get underway until March 10, 2024, it is never too early to start making our predictions for all the big honors like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, and the nearly two dozen other categories. It is hard to say what upcoming big-screen titles will find their way into those prized categories, as we are still awaiting the lion’s share of those releases, but there are some 2023 movies that seem like a shoe-in at this admittedly extremely early point in the game.

That being said, we wanted to get started in putting together a guide to our early Oscars® predictions that will hopefully come true when the 2024 Academy Awards takes place next spring.

Expect to see changes and updates to this article through the end of the year, as Oscar-hopefuls make their grand debut at AMC Theatres locations nationwide. But for now, let’s swing into action with one of the movies that will surely be up for the Best Animated Feature category, and will most likely be in consideration for a slew of other awards, including Best PIcture…

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

There’s no doubt about it – we are currently living in the golden age of comic book movies, and perhaps even the next great era of animation. And if you needed further proof of that, look no further than SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, the new follow-up to 2018’s INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, a movie that pushed both the superhero genre and animation as a whole to new heights.

Over the years, there have only been three animated films nominated for Best Picture – BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, UP, and TOY STORY 3 – but none of those were able to secure a victory. But that could all change next spring if the producers of the inventive, heartfelt, and multi-dimensional Spider-Man movie claim the top prize at the Oscars. And there’s reason to believe that this could finally happen.

Picking up a little more than a year after the events of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, the animated sequel follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he tries to find his place in his family, school, neighborhood, and the multiverse as he comes in contact with a silly yet vindictive and powerful villain and a group known as the Spider-Society. Without giving too much away, Miles is pushed to new limits as he traverses the Spider-Verse in search of answers and a way to prevent a tragic yet seemingly unavoidable fate for those he loves.

With a combination of vastly different animation styles, an amazing and twisty story, and tremendous performances from its cast, it’s quite easy to see why Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson’s thrill ride is receiving so much Oscars buzz, not only when it comes to Best Animated Feature but also Best Picture, which it could very well win.

Will SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE become the first animated film to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture? Time will tell…
